WHAT ARE DYNAMIC WRINKLES?

There is a distinction between dynamic wrinkles and static wrinkles.
Dynamic wrinkles are wrinkles that are visible on the face during muscular contractions such as frowning and squinting. Once these muscles relax, dynamic wrinkles disappear as the skin springs back to its original position.

Common dynamic wrinkles include:

  • Frown lines between eyebrows
  • Forehead wrinkles
  • Crow’s feet
  • Smile lines around the mouth

BOTOX is an effective treatment for dynamic wrinkles as it has the ability to temporarily and partially relax facial muscles. As dynamic wrinkles fade away when the underlying muscle contractions are relaxed, it will result in a smoother and more youthful looking complexion all around.

On the other hand, as we age, the production of collagen declines, causing the skin to lose its elasticity. As a result, dynamic wrinkles will eventually become static wrinkles. Static wrinkles are wrinkles that are visible on the face even when facial muscles are relaxed and tend to deepen with age, therefore, BOTOX would not be an effective treatment. Instead, injectable dermal fillers are best for addressing static wrinkles.

WHO CAN PROVIDE BOTOX COSMETIC TREATMENTS?

Only dentists, physicians and nurses who have had proper BOTOX injection training can administer BOTOX injections. At the Medical Rejuvenation Centre, Dr. Morrell administers BOTOX injections.

DOES BOTOX HAVE ANY SIDE EFFECTS?

BOTOX has been used and studied for 40 years clinically. There are no long-term side effects. The most common short-term side effects include bruising, and possibly a mild headache the day following treatment.

WHEN WILL I START SEEING THE RESULTS?

Often, patients can start to see the effects of BOTOX within 2-3 days. BOTOX is usually 85% effective 4 days after treatment and fully effective at 2 weeks.

WHAT ELSE CAN BOTOX BE USED FOR OTHER THAN TREATING AND PREVENTING WRINKLES?

Cosmetically, BOTOX can be used to lift and shape the brow, remove furrows, lift the tip of the nose, lift the drooping edges of the mouth, tighten jaw line and lift jowls, soften neck circular lines, soften neck vertical lines and get rid of “gummy” smiles.

Medical uses of BOTOX®

Producing some sweat is not a bad thing – in fact, sweat is necessary to keep your body at a healthy temperature. However, some people sweat way beyond what an antiperspirant can hand. When your body produces way more sweat than it needs to, you could be suffering from a medical condition known as hyperhidrosis. Hyperhidrosis is not a life-threatening condition, but it can seriously affect your quality of life. Besides being a big inconvenience and costing you money, hyperhidrosis can cause skin breakouts, unpleasant odors and promote infection. The good news about hyperhidrosis is that it can be successfully treated!

BOTOX® focal injections are an effective hyperhidrosis treatment and is the only prescription medication approved for hyperhidrosis treatment. In one study of excessive underarm sweating, 95% of patients experienced an average reduction in sweating of 83% in one week. Plus, the effect lasts up to seven months on average.

FOCAL HYPERHIDROSIS AFFECTS:

  • Underarms (axillary hyperhidrosis)
  • Hands (palmar hyperhidrosis)
  • Feet (plantar hyperhidrosis)
  • Face (facial hyperhidrosis) The procedure is simple.

A small amount of the drug is injected intradermally to the affected area using a very fine needle. That means the needle is placed just under the skin and the discomfort is, therefore, quite minimal. You may also opt for some local anaesthetic cream if you are concerned about needles. Results take effect within 2 weeks!

Almost everyone has experienced headaches in their lifetime, but for many people, headaches go far beyond mere discomfort and annoyance; they can be debilitating and last for days. These headaches are called migraines and are often accompanied by nausea, vomiting, photo-phobia (increased sensitivity to light), and phonophobia (increased sensitivity to sound).

BOTOX was discovered to be an effective treatment for migraines when patients with chronic migraine headaches noticed that their headaches improved after receiving BOTOX injections to lessen lines and wrinkles on their foreheads.

How does it work?

BOTOX® works to interrupt signals sent to nerves that cause the muscle contractions that trigger the erratic nerve firing and blood vessel spasms of migraine headaches. After receiving a BOTOX® treatment, migraine attacks can be reduced for 3 to 6 months.

Is it covered by extended health benefit programs?

BOTOX migraine treatments are generally covered by Extended Health Benefit Programs, check with your health care provider to see if you are covered for this procedure.

Is there any downtime?

The procedure itself is quick and simple and patients are able to resume their daily activities immediately after having it done.
