WHAT IS BOTOX (BOTULINUM TOXIN)?

BOTOX COSMETIC® is a highly sought after (or leading) non-invasive injectable treatment used to smooth wrinkles and slow down the signs of aging. Botulinum Toxin is the scientific name for this neurotoxic protein which is derived from the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. It is purified 27 times before it becomes the safe anti-aging product we know as BOTOX COSMETICⓇ. At Medical Rejuvenation Centre, Dr. Morrell and his staff of highly experienced healthcare professionals use BOTOX to freshen your appearance by enhancing your natural contours.

BEFORE / AFTER

HOW DOES BOTOX WORK?

BOTOX is a purified protein that works by temporarily blocking nerve impulses to targeted muscles. It weakens the muscle so that it can’t contract, thereby relaxing and softening wrinkles. These non-invasive injections are administered directly into the desired treatment area. The most popular area for treatment is the face to target deep wrinkles, improve lines and aid in anti-aging. You may feel a momentary pinch or tingle when the product is injected. Generally, the effects are noticeable within 4 days and fully effective after 2 weeks. Contrary to some opinions, you should still be able to make all facial expressions after receiving Botox.

Appointments are usually completed within 15 minutes and you can resume most regular activities immediately. The injector will advise you that you may resume other activities such as working out, 4 hours after your treatment.

IS BOTOX SAFE?

When administered by a licensed professional, BOTOX injections are safe. BOTOX is well researched and has been widely used clinically for 40 years. There are no long-term side effects. Short-term complications may include slight pain, swelling or bruising at the injection area and possibly a mild headache.

BOTOX is the most widely researched medicine in the world and globally distributed. The purified protein, BOTOX COSMETICⓇ by Allergan, is considered a safe anti-wrinkle treatment and was approved for cosmetic injections by Health Canada in 2001.

WHEN WILL I SEE THE RESULTS FROM BOTOX? HOW LONG WILL IT LAST?

Most patients will see results of Botox within 10-14 days, but it is recommended to wait a full 14 days to see the full results of the treatment.

Most patients enjoy lasting results for 3-4 months. First-time users may see the effects fade quicker, while long-term users may see the anti-wrinkle effects gradually last longer.

HOW MANY UNITS OF BOTOX DO I NEED?

Your individual needs will determine the number of BOTOX units needed to treat the specified area. To determine your needs, it’s best to have a consultation with a qualified health professional at Medical Rejuvenation Clinic.

Generally, men require more BOTOX units to relax the muscles than women, since they tend to have stronger face muscles. The lines above your eyebrow are called glabellar lines. The recommended dose for men is 40 units, while for women the recommended dose is up to 20 units.

The general guide for BOTOX injections from Allergan suggests 12 units around each eye for crow’s feet, 20 units total above the eyebrows and 20 units for horizontal forehead lines. That is a total of 64 units to treat all three areas to help diminish forehead wrinkles and brighten your eyes. However, this is a guide and some patients may need much less for efficacy, anywhere from 10-30 units.

WHAT IS A BOTOX BROW LIFT?

A brow lift done with Botox treats the frown lines between the eyebrows and on the forehead, and elevates the height of the eyebrows. The Botox is injected into the muscles that pull the eyebrows down, so that the upward-pulling muscles can ‘pull’ the eyebrows back up and into their original place and allow the skin to smooth out.

WHAT AREAS CAN BE TREATED WITH BOTOX?

Botox can be injected into various different areas of the body. The most common area is the face – Botox is commonly injected to dissipate fine lines and wrinkles by relaxing the facial muscles. This includes the forehead, crows feet, frown lines, etc.

Along with cosmetic Botox, there are many other places where Botox can be injected in the body to help with various concerns – this includes in the hands and armpits to treat hyperhidrosis, in the calves to shape and slim, in various points of the head to relieve migraine headaches, etc.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN BOTOX AND FILLER?

Botox and filler can help with similar concerns, however they tackle the problem areas much differently. Botox is a muscle relaxer that freezes the muscles underneath your skin. This stops the muscle from moving too much, which is what causes lines and wrinkles to appear. Botox can also be used for therapeutic reasons, whereas filler is most commonly used cosmetically.

Filler plumps up the areas of skin that have lost the firmness they once had due to aging. The filler will fill in the tissue where the volume has been lost. It can also be used to smooth fine lines on the face.

WHAT IS THE MOST COMMON AGE FOR BOTOX?

While Botox is most commonly administered to those between the ages of 30-60, it is common for patients younger and older to receive Botox injections. Some patients start receiving Botox in their early-mid 20’s as a preventative measure before deep wrinkles begin to form. It is rare to begin getting Botox before the age of 20 due to the amount of hyaluronic acid, elastin, and collagen in your skin before the age of 20, meaning your skin can hide the effects of overactive muscles.

HOW MUCH IS BOTOX PER UNIT IN BC?

In BC, Botox prices typically range between $10 and $18 per unit. All clinics price their Botox injections differently. At MRC, Botox injections are $12 per unit. As each patient will need a different number of units, it is hard to determine how much each treatment will cost as cost varies depending on how many units are needed. Cost and treatment plans can be discussed during your consultation with your injector.

WHO IS BEST QUALIFIED TO INJECT BOTOX?

Botox can be administered by licensed physicians, and midlevel practitioners, such as nurse practitioners, physician assistants, etc. It is important to do your research and ensure you are visiting a licensed and experienced injector. Training is required for all medical professionals who want to perform this procedure – this training will typically go over facial anatomy, different types of injectables, and injection techniques. All of the injectors at MRC are licensed professionals who have been injecting for many years, so you can feel assured that you are in safe hands.
